What to wear to a Christmas party

A Christmas party is one of the few occasions where the dress code is loose but the expectations are high. It might be the office do on a Thursday afternoon, a drinks party with old friends, or a night out that starts in a bar and ends somewhere much later. The best outfits for all of these do the same job: festive enough to feel like the season, but easy enough to wear all evening.

For most people that means a dress or a co-ord, a piece of jewellery with a bit of shine, and shoes you can dance in. Velvet, satin and textured fabrics all read as seasonal without anything printed on them, and a plain black or deep green dress will look right in almost any room.

Dresses for a Christmas party

Dresses are the most popular choice for a party, and they are where we see the most variety. Our current edit includes pieces from Rixo, known for feminine cuts and bold prints, and from Queens of Archive, including the Albertine Maxi Dress and the Pearl Mini Dress for a more dressed-up night. Never Fully Dressed's Black Star Devore Felicity Dress is a simpler option that still looks festive.

Think about the length of the evening before you buy. Satin and crepe look sharp after dark but can feel less forgiving over a long day. Velvet is warm, which is a plus in December, though it can feel heavy after a few hours.

Trousers and co-ords

If dresses are not your thing, a pair of sequin or velvet trousers with a fitted top or a blazer makes a strong party outfit. The Black Sequin Naomi Trouser and the Burgundy Velvet Trousers from Never Fully Dressed both suit an evening out. Keep the top simple, as the trousers do most of the work, and finish with heels or a sleek boot.

Blazers and layers

A blazer over a slip dress or a fitted top is one of the easiest ways to get a party look that works at the office and afterwards. The Edie Classic Gabardine Blazer from DAY Birger et Mikkelsen is a tailored option in black, and a good jacket is also the piece you will be glad of on the walk to the taxi.

Jewellery to finish

Jewellery does a lot of the festive work. Talis Chains' New York Necklace Long in gold and the Flower Pendant Necklace in white crystal are the statement pieces here. By Alona adds a more considered note with the Celestine Necklace in silver and the Bernadette Necklace in Tigers Eye, and Orelia's LUXE Interlocking Ring and Semi-Precious Green Jade Micro Hoop Earrings are easy additions. Gold suits most dress colours, and a single statement earring is often enough. Explore the full jewellery edit to find something that matches your outfit.

Footwear for the evening

Think about the venue before you choose shoes. A heeled boot works with a dress in December and is far easier on cold walks than a strappy sandal. For a longer night, a block heel is more comfortable than a stiletto. Esska has the heels for the season, including the Charlie Mid Heel T-Bar Sandal in Metallic Black and the Venice High Heel Shoe in Onyx.
